Eco-Friendly Home Fragrance: Why Soy Wax Matters

Eco-Friendly Home Fragrance: Why Soy Wax Matters

Dan Richardson

Home fragrance is one of life's small luxuries — but like many everyday products, it's worth thinking about what's actually in it and where it comes from. If you care about the environment and what you bring into your home, here's why soy wax is worth choosing over conventional alternatives.

What's Wrong with Paraffin Wax?

Most mass-market candles are made from paraffin wax — a by-product of petroleum refining. When burned, paraffin can release trace amounts of potentially harmful compounds including toluene and benzene. It also produces more soot than natural waxes, which can affect air quality in your home and leave black marks on walls and ceilings over time.

Beyond the burn, paraffin is a non-renewable resource derived from crude oil — not exactly in keeping with a more sustainable lifestyle.

Why Soy Wax Is Different

Soy wax is made from hydrogenated soybean oil — a natural, plant-based, and renewable resource. Here's why it's a better choice:

  • Cleaner burn: Soy wax produces significantly less soot than paraffin, meaning cleaner air in your home and no black residue on your walls or jar.
  • Longer lasting: Soy wax has a lower melting point than paraffin, which means it burns more slowly and evenly — giving you more hours of fragrance per candle.
  • Better scent throw: The lower burn temperature of soy wax allows fragrance oils to be released more gently and consistently, filling your room with scent rather than burning it off quickly.
  • Biodegradable: Soy wax is naturally biodegradable, making it easier to clean up and kinder to the environment at end of life.
  • Renewable: Soybeans are a renewable crop, unlike petroleum-based paraffin.

What About Fragrance Oils?

The fragrance component of a candle matters too. We use high-quality fragrance oils that are free from harmful additives, and we're always working to expand our use of fragrances that are skin-safe and responsibly sourced. Our goal is a candle that smells incredible and that you can feel good about burning in your home. Not sure which scent is right for you? Read our guide to choosing the perfect home fragrance.

Our Packaging Commitment

Eco-conscious home fragrance doesn't stop at the wax. Our outer packaging is plastic-free and made from recycled materials wherever possible. But we go further than that — with every order, we plant trees to offset our footprint, and we actively remove ocean-bound plastic from coastal communities before it reaches the sea.

We believe that beautiful packaging and sustainable packaging aren't mutually exclusive — and we're committed to proving it. Find out more about our process in our behind the scenes guide to how we make our candles.

Making a More Conscious Choice

Switching to soy wax candles and natural home fragrance is one of those small, easy swaps that genuinely makes a difference — to the air in your home, to your environmental footprint, and to the small independent makers who put real care into what they create.

At little inferno, sustainability isn't a marketing tick-box. It's baked into every decision we make, from the wax we choose to the packaging we send your order in. We're not perfect — but we're always working to do better.
